2019 Alter Ego de Palmer Margaux
VM94JR17+
Producer notes: “The Merlots give rise to wines full of power, exuberance, and body. The Cabernets developed a certain coolness and reserve, leading to wines of rare distinction. It is this uncommon coupling that has seen 2019 enter the exclusive club of truly exceptional vintages”.

Blend: Merlot 51%, Cabernet sauvignon 40%, Petit Verdot 9%

2020 Blanc Sec de Suduiraut
The original name was Ch d’Allard, the name of the family who owned the property from 1580 until the end of the century. In the 1660s, Blaise de Suduiraut gave the estate his name. He also used the King’s gardener Le Notre for the grounds (they keep the same shape nowadays)

The vineyards are located at the foot of Yquem hill. 25% of the production is made as a dry wine, Blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc for the freshness and acidity, topped up with 25% of Semillon for the aromatics and texture.

2016 Canon 1er Grand Cru St Emilion
VM97RP98+JR18
Decanter 98/100
“This vintage delivers a beautiful, classic style of Canon that is right at the top of what St-Émilion can offer. Compact and dense without being hard, it is finely structured both in terms of the texture of the cassis and blackberry fruits and in the shape of the tannins.

It demonstrates a clear minerality and a feather-brushing of violet notes. This is less obviously sexy than 2015, but is a wine that offers a masterclass in what limestone terroir can convey - salinity, succulence, hints of austerity and reserves of power.

I retasted it a few times, and the main take away of what to expect is layers of flavour and huge persistency. The details of how they worked the vintage are an added bonus to understanding how they achieved this result. When it started getting hot and dry, they left all green cover on the vines, and did no green harvesting except tidying up in September. The result was loading the vines to avoid over-concentration.”

2020 Cantenac Brown 3rd Cru Margaux
VM97RP92JR16.5
2020 Cantenac Brown is another superb wine from the Margaux appellation offering tremendous value for money, with Antonio Galloni labelling the wine "one of the wines of the vintage."

Over the past few years Director Leo Sanfins and his team have dedicated a huge amount of time to working in the vineyard, which is unquestionably paying off.

The 2020 produced another excellent showing in bottle, with "balanced power" the most fitting descriptor. This wine is up there with the finest this property has ever produced.

2014 Carmes de Rieussec, Sauternes
VM91RP89
The Carmes de Rieussec 2014 is a blend of 92% Semillon and 4% each of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. It has a very pure and honeyed bouquet that demonstrates superb intensity. The palate is unctuous on the entry with a touch of ginger, plenty of botrytised fruit but just missing the persistence on the finish that cuts away a little swiftly, just as the wine is getting into its stride. Still, this should be a capable deuxième vin. Neal Martin 88-90/100

2022 Chateau Angelus Premier Grand Cru Classe A, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
VM96
“The 2022 Angélus was cropped at 40hL/ha. It is aged partly in foudres (around half the Cabernet Franc, to be exact) and the remainder in new barrels, the Grand Vin with 14.45% alcohol and 3.65 pH. This takes a few minutes to unfold in the glass. Blackberry, iris petals and crushed stone notes are focused and delineated. There's opulence locked into these aromatics, but that is contained. The palate is medium-bodied with a mineral opening. Graphite and fresh tobacco thread through the layered black fruit, perhaps spicier than recent vintages. A gentle grip on the finish has some wood tannins to resolve, which should be addressed during its élevage. This will need several years in bottle, probably a decade; then I envisage this Saint-Émilion soaring.”(95-97/100) Drinking Window 2028 – 2050

2022 Chateau Ausone Premier Grand Cru Classe A, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
VM96.25
“The 2022 Ausone was picked from 5 to 30 September and matured for 20 months in French oak. These aromatics take a little time to open in the glass. Once they do, they are precise with wilted iris flowers infusing the black fruit and background pencil box and incense hints. The palate is medium-bodied with silver bead acidity threaded through the blackberry and bilberry fruit. Fresh and focused, this Ausone possesses a structured finish with a pinch of black pepper on the finish. Elegant in style, this Ausone almost creeps up in you and seduces, intellectual and persistent in the mouth. Upon departing, I couldn't help wondering if I had witnessed this Saint-Émilion demonstrates its full potential, hence the plus sign against my score. 14.4% alcohol.”(95-97.5/100) Drinking Window 2030 – 2065Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2023
