Producer Profile
Graham's
Graham’s is one of the most important names in Port, with a rich history dating back to 1820 when the Graham family received a large amount of Portuguese wine as a payment for a debt. Today they operate under the ownership of the Symington Family Estate, who purchased the domaine in 1970. Over this storied history, they have established themselves as one of the most distinguished and fascinating Port producers.
William Graham set up a trading company in Glasgow in 1784 which developed into an exporting enterprise. Then in 1820, his son John accepted 27 pipes of Port as repayment for a debt. The shipment was sent to Glasgow, where for the first time Port was received at the port. This proved to be a successful venture for their company, so they decided in 1880 to purchase the Quinta dos Malvedos vineyards, securing their own supply of grapes.
In the 1960s the house began to struggle, culminating in the sale of the estate to Symington, who had a long-standing relationship with the firm. The company then continued to grow, eventually receiving a Royal Warrant, and growing their portfolio by releasing a range of blends for a wider audience.
Today their collection includes white blends, ruby Port, Vintage, Tawny, LBV, and their Six Grapes Reserve, alongside others. Whilst the estate is traditional, they are certainly modernising and continuing to meet changing market trends.
The company also sources grapes from Quinta da Vila Velha and Quinta das Lagas as well as Quinta dos Malvedos. In 2017, they also purchased its first vineyard outside of the Douro, in the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal, where they expanded their portfolio even further.
