Producer Profile
Clos Fourtet
This 20-hectare vineyard forms a single plot, planted on the highest slopes of Western Saint-Emilion. Ever since the conception of the Saint-Emilion classification in 1956, Clos Fourtet has held its position as one of the elite Premier Grand Cru Classes of the region.
Clos Fourtet has had several owners throughout its history, going through a sort of renaissance under the stewardship of the Lurton’s in the latter half of the 20th Century. Pierre Lurton as winemaker really saw a surge in their profile and reputation; earning them recognition as one of the finest estates on the St. Martin plateau. He eventually left the estate, and was replaced by Daniel Alard. Then, in 2011, Clos Fourtet was purchased by Phillipe Cuvelier.
Their vineyards are planted with 72% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. They are meticulous in their care for the estate, with the use of organic and biodynamic practices to ensure the longevity of the vines for the future. They then vinify traditionally, and mature in 60% new oak barriques for 18 months before bottling without filtration.
