Producer Profile
Chateau Suduiraut
Chateau Suduiraut is located in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux. An area prized for its production of sweets, largely made up of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. This Chateau in particular was classified as Premier Cru under the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. They own some of the finest terroir in the region and is prized for its richness and power. It has been owned by AXA since 1992 and is managed by the great Christian Seely, but the château dates back to the 16th century.
The estate borders the world-famous, chateau d’Yquem, with over 90 hectares under vine. They are based on gravelly, sandy soils near the bank of the Gironde river, where humidity and nearby streams aid the development of botrytis (necessary for the production of sweet wine in this region). Only the best, botrytis-affected grapes are used in production of their premium sweet wine. Their Grand Vin is aged on lees for up to 24 months before release.
Their vineyards are planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. As well as producing sweet wines, the estate now produces several dry expressions of these grapes. These aromatic blends offer a unique interpretation of the Sauternes terroir, as it is rare to see this style of wine here.
Suduiraut's winemaker Pierre Pascaud has produced a series of outstanding wines which are powerful, complex and beautifully harmonious. The wines show at their best with at least 10 years of bottle age.
