Château Lagrange
Château Lagrange is a Third Growth estate based within the appellation of Saint-Julien, on Bordeaux’s left bank. They are the largest estate within St-Julien, covering 118 hectares with a single swathe of vines, farmed using biodynamic principles.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the real star here, supported by small amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot. The estate lies across two hills, with clay and limestone subsoil, with a topsoil of pebbles and gravel. They also plant a small proportion of white varieties (approximately 9.8 hectares), for their white wine: Les Arums de Lagrange.
Château Lagrange was a relatively overlooked Third Growth until substantial investment from Japanese drinks giant, Suntory, in 1983. Since then, the estate has gone from strength to strength, with the winemaking prowess of Matthieu Bordes overseeing the estate.
