Producer Profile
Château Prieuré-Lichine
Located in the heart of Margaux, Château Prieuré-Lichine is a renowned Fourth Growth estate on Bordeaux’s left bank. Their wines are recognised for their rounded texture, finesse and aromatic intensity. They are guided by one main goal: to reveal the diversity of the great terroirs of Margaux.
Founded in the 12th Century by the monks of the Abbey of Vertheuil, who then began producing wine there in 1444. In 1951, the estate was acquired by the legendary Alexis Lichine. He greatly improved the quality of the wine by modernising vinification techniques and investing heavily in the vineyards. In 1989, the estate was taken over by his son Sacha, alongside oenology consultant Michel Rolland.
The estate is one of the most fragmented in the Medoc, with as many as 40 separate parcels covering a total of 68 hectares of vineyards. Their wines typically use a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. They use a relatively higher proportion of a Merlot, compared with their neighbours, giving a wonderfully perfumed nose, and supple character.
