Producer Profile
Château du Tertre
Château du Tertre is a distinguished Fifth Growth estate located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France. Its origins trace back to the 12th century, with the estate's current château constructed in 1736. In 1997, Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma acquired Château du Tertre, initiating a comprehensive restoration that revitalized the estate's vineyards and winemaking facilities. In 2021, ownership transitioned to the Helfrich family, who have continued to uphold the estate's esteemed reputation.
The vineyard spans 52 hectares, situated on one of the highest gravelly hilltops in the Margaux region. This elevated position provides optimal sun exposure and natural drainage, contributing to the production of wines with finesse and elegance. The estate's terroir comprises fine gravel, clay, and sandy soils, ideal for cultivating Bordeaux's classic grape varieties. The vineyard is planted with 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, and 11% Cabernet Franc.
Château du Tertre's winemaking philosophy emphasizes traditional techniques combined with modern innovations. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo optical sorting to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in a mix of wooden, concrete, and stainless steel vats, allowing for precise control over the vinification process. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a significant percentage being new, imparting subtle oak nuances and enhancing the wine's complexity.
