Producer Profile
Château Langoa-Barton
Château Langoa-Barton is a Third Growth estate within the appellation of Saint-Julien, on Bordeaux’s left bank. It was one of the Bordeaux estates purchased by Hugh Barton in the 1820s, the other being Leoville-Barton. It is a model of St-Julien, expressing restraint and elegance.
Hugh Barton was a descendant of an Irish family which settled in Bordeaux in the 18th century and which has a long and distinguished history in the region’s wine trade. Both properties are still family-owned and run and together represent the longest tradition of unchanged ownership in the Médoc. After the death of the late Anthony Barton in 2022, his daughter Lilian and grandson Damien Barton have now taken the reins.
The estate has 20 hectares of vineyards, planted to 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc atop gravelly-clay soils. Historically, the wines were regarded as slightly lighter and quite forward, but in recent years they have become noticeably richer, deeper in colour and concentrated on the palate.
