Château Palmer

Château Palmer is a Grand Cru Classé estate in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region. Their wines from are typically known for their elegance, complexity, and ability to age gracefully. The estate blends grape varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating, complemented by Merlot and Petit Verdot. Château Palmer's commitment to quality winemaking, innovation, and sustainable practices contributes to the distinct style and reputation of its wines.

In 1814, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Palmer embarked on a journey from Bordeaux to Paris. Madame Marie Brunet de Ferrière, widow of the Baron de Gascq, was sitting next to him and ended up selling him the celebrated Médoc wine estate she had recently inherited. Over nearly three decades, he diligently expanded and modernized the estate, laying the groundwork for its enduring elegance.

Today, Sabrina Pernet, the current Technical Director of Château Palmer, is a fervent advocate for a comprehensive approach to winemaking, treating each plot as a cherished garden. Guided by her innate understanding of biodynamic viticulture and a profound connection to the living world, she has led transformative initiatives at the estate. These include planting fruit trees, experimenting with green fertilizer, and introducing animals. Recognizing the need for a nuanced understanding of the soil, Pernet initiated a "resistivity" mapping in 2007, utilizing electric currents to measure water content, precisely defining soil structure and intra-plot borders.

Alter Ego was launched with the 1998 vintage, driven by the idea of producing another facet to the estate. Spontaneous, round, generous, and silky, this 'other wine' is both intense and light, rich and delicate. It has the elegance and grain de tannin of its predecessor. Throughout its creation, Alter Ego is led by the same high standards that govern the composition of Château Palmer's great wine.

Introduced with the 1998 vintage, Alter Ego emerged from the concept of crafting an additional dimension to the estate's offerings. Spontaneous, rounded, generous, and silky, this 'alternative wine' possesses a unique blend of intensity and lightness, richness, and delicacy. Mirroring the elegance and tannin finesse of its counterpart, Alter Ego adheres to the same high standards that guide the formulation of Château Palmer's distinguished wine throughout its development.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 87

The 2004 Palmer is not one of my favorite vintages of that decade, though this is one of the best bottles. It lacks intensity and harmony on the nose, with prominent tobacco/cigar smoke scents and just a hint of boot polish. The palate is medium-bodied and spicy on the entry, with a touch of licorice that tapers toward the off-dry finish. I would broach bottles in the next three to four years. Tasted at the Lia’s Wings/book dinner at Medlar restaurant. [Neal Martin, 26/12/2023]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2030

Vinous 92

Deep red. Rich aromas of plum, redcurrant, chocolate and smoke. Sweet, lush and smooth, with a wonderfully fine-grained texture for the year. Highly expressive flavors of currant, cedar, chocolate and tobacco. The wine’s subtle sweetness, suave tannins and sneaky persistence convey an impression of very regular ripeness. [Stephen Tanzer, 05/01/2007]

Wine Advocate 95

This is a stunning Palmer considering the growing season and for this writer, on par with Chateau Margaux. It has a deep garnet/purple hue. The nose is divine: pure black fruits, bilberry, cedar and a touch of iodine all with fabulous definition. The palate is full-bodied with very fine tannins, modern in style but exuding pedigree and class. Very refined on the finish with just a slight peppery edge. Love this wine, love it! Drink 2016-2035. Tasted November 2008. [Neal Martin, 01/11/2008]

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035

47% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot. Fine weather from spring to harvest. No excesses. Had to control yields that were high after the 2003 heat stress. Lots of secondary buds. Similar blend to 1999 but a very different wine – shows that it is not the varietal composition the determines the character of the wine. Deep crimson brightness. Sweetly oaky – intense and immediately recognisable bread dough aroma. Underneath that there’s fine pure upright cassis but also sweet spice and plum and tobacco. Already surprisingly complex. Intense but fleeting floral perfume as that breadiness disappears. On the palate, masses of liquorice and sweet bright expressive fruit. Red and black fruit. Dramatic fruit even though the spice of the oak is still very clear. Toasty sweet spice and coffee. Rich and opulent fruit. Tannins are finely textured and a little firm but velvety. Long way to go though already generous. Delicious. Great finesse and fine-boned though it does show the oak a little more than the 2006. (JH) [14/09/2009]

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030
