Producer Profile
M. Chapoutier
Michel Chapoutier is one of the foremost producers in the Rhone region. It is known for its wines from the north and south of the valley, particularly for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively. They combine tradition and innovation to produce bold and unique wines across diverse terroir.
Founded in 1808, Michel took charge in 1988 and became the seventh generation of his family to run the Domaine. Since then, quality has soared. Alongside growing the Domaine, he invests in new winemaking projects across the globe, as far-flung as Australia. His children, particularly his daughter, Mathilde, are now increasingly involved in the daily management of the Maison, bringing with her entrepreneurial skills and vision.
Michel Chapoutier avoided the use of traditional, large format chestnut foudres for aging, instead moving toward smaller oak casks with shorter aging periods. He also advocated for keeping the wines unfiltered and unfined, and to work with only biodynamically or organically grown fruit across all of the vineyards.
They seek to discover and reflect the full potential of his terroirs and let the soil express their true character. That which gives the wines their unique signature style. This now forms the basis of the M. Chapoutier ethos, and the team strives to reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer.
