Château Margaux
Château Margaux is one of the most famous and prestigious wine estates in the world. Its origins can be traced back to the 12th century, though its modern reputation took shape in the 18th century when it became known for producing exceptional wines. The estate was classified as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification, a prestigious distinction it continues to hold today.
Its vineyards cover 262 acres, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The estate’s winemaking heritage has been passed down through generations, and it has been owned by the same family since 1977, when it was purchased by the renowned Mentzelopoulos family.
The terroir of Château Margaux is particularly well-suited to the production of high-quality wine, thanks to the gravelly soils that promote excellent drainage and ideal conditions for ripening. The estate’s vineyards are planted with about 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the remainder divided between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This composition, along with a meticulous approach to vineyard management, including selective hand harvesting, ensures the production of wines of great complexity, depth, and elegance. The estate is also known for its commitment to sustainable farming practices, focusing on reducing environmental impact by using organic methods and carefully managing water use.
Château Margaux’s winemaking process is equally meticulous, with a focus on minimal intervention to allow the terroir to shine. The wine undergoes fermentation in small, temperature-controlled vats, with the juice being gently extracted to preserve purity. The wine is then aged in new French oak barrels for up to 18 months, which imparts additional complexity and structure. The final product is known for its refinement and aging potential, with flavors of blackcurrant, plum, tobacco, and subtle floral notes.
