Champagne Philipponnat is one of the oldest family-owned Champagne houses, with roots tracing back to 1522. Located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, in the heart of the Champagne region, the house has built its reputation on tradition, excellence, and a deep respect for the land. Over the centuries, the Philipponnat family has maintained a strong commitment to crafting wines that reflect the character of their terroir. A cornerstone of Philipponnat’s identity is its iconic single-vineyard cuvée, Clos des Goisses. This steeply sloped, south-facing plot along the Marne River is one of the warmest and most distinctive vineyards in Champagne. Planted primarily with Pinot Noir, Clos des Goisses produces powerful, age-worthy wines with remarkable complexity and minerality. The vineyard’s name, derived from the old regional term “gois,” meaning a very steep slope, speaks to both the vineyard’s geography and the challenges of cultivating it—challenges the Philipponnat team meets with skill and dedication.
Today, under the leadership of Charles Philipponnat, the house continues to innovate while honouring centuries-old methods. Fermentation in oak barrels, partial malolactic fermentation, and low dosage are just a few of the practices that define their approach to winemaking.
