Producer Profile
Château Le Gay
Château Le Gay is a highly regarded estate located in the heart of the Pomerol appellation, Bordeaux, with a history dating back to the 18th century. The estate spans 7.5 hectares on the prestigious plateau of Pomerol, where the soils are a mix of clay and gravel. Owned by the Moueix family since 1996, the estate has undergone extensive improvements, including the modernization of the winery and a shift toward sustainable practices in the vineyard. With careful attention to detail in both viticulture and winemaking, Château Le Gay produces wines that consistently reflect the true essence of Pomerol.
The vineyard is predominantly planted with Merlot, which accounts for about 90% of the vines, while the remaining 10% is devoted to Cabernet Franc. The clay soils of Pomerol are particularly suited to Merlot, yielding wines with deep, dark fruit flavors, a smooth texture, and rich tannins. Cabernet Franc, though a small percentage of the vineyard, adds complexity and freshness, contributing aromatic notes of spice, herbs, and floral hints. The vineyard is managed with a focus on low yields to ensure that only the highest quality fruit is produced. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, and each bunch is meticulously sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery. After fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with around 50% of them being new oak to impart a subtle yet complex layer of spice and structure to the final wine.
Château Le Gay’s wines are known for their power, elegance, and exceptional aging potential. The flagship wine, Château Le Gay, displays a deep, garnet color and offers an aromatic profile of ripe blackberries, plums, and dark cherries, complemented by earthy notes of truffles, tobacco, and a touch of violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, yet refined, with silky, well-integrated tannins and a velvety texture. The oak aging contributes complexity with subtle vanilla, cedar, and spice flavors that perfectly balance the rich fruit character. The wine has a long, persistent finish, and with proper cellaring, it can evolve beautifully over the next 10 to 20 years, revealing greater depth and complexity. Château Le Gay has earned a strong reputation among collectors and wine enthusiasts for its ability to express the unique qualities of the Pomerol terroir while maintaining elegance and balance throughout its aging process.
