Producer Profile
Pol Roger
Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in 1849, at the age of 18, in the firm’s native village of Ay. As the business rapidly developed, they moved to Epernay in 1851. Then as early as 1855, they focused on the production of brut champagne, as it was the preferred style of the English. Eventually, Maurice and Georges Roger took over from their father Pol.
It was in the post-war period, that Winston Churchill left his mark on the house. He became an emblematic figure and unwavering client, stating that it was “the most drinkable address in the world”.
Eventually, the Cuvee Winston Churchill would be launched at Blenheim Palace in 1975.
The philosophy of Pol Roger encompasses refinement and pleasure. So it is unsurprising that it was the favourite, not only of Winston Churchill, but also Queen Elizabeth II. It is a source of infinite pleasure and reflects a whole lifestyle. The wines unite the family’s spirit and the character of the vineyard. The quality and consistency is achieved through ‘know-how’ passed down through the generations.
Over 175 years of history, spanning 6 generations, Pol Roger has carved out one of the most flattering reputations in the select circle of the leading champagne brands. Each of the wines that bears their name is treated as an ambassador to their impeccable history.
Today, the brand is still owned and run by the descendants of Pol Roger. They have adopted a more expansive sales strategy, and undergone a complete renovation. In addition to its own 92 hectare vineyard, the house has worked tirelessly to ensure sourcing of the best grapes from growers, in order to maintain its current level of excellence which is recognized worldwide. The house annually produces around 110,000 cases of Champagne.
