Producer Profile
Château Montrose
Château Montrose is one of the leading properties of the St-Estephe appellation on Bordeaux’s left bank. There wines are quintessential St-Estephe clarets; deeply coloured and powerful when young, yet possess fantastic ageing potential. They were classified as a Second Growth estate in the 1855 classification.
The estate sits just 800 metres from the Gironde estuary, ensuring a microclimate which is protected against frost. The vines sit atop deep clay-gravel soils, and benefit from a south-easterly aspect. Their vineyards are planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 40% of their production is dedicated to their Grand Vin, 30% to their second wine La Dame Montrose, and 30% to their third wine, Tertio de Montrose. This estate was among the first to produce a second wine, starting in the 1860s.
They have upheld their excellent reputation over hundreds of years. Their 1970 vintage famously placed third in the historic ‘Judgement of Paris’ wine tasting in 1976. The estate has been under the ownership of Olivier and Martin Bouygues since 2006, and they have proudly upheld tradition with consistent quality, and achieved numerous 100 point scores from the likes of Robert Parker.
