Producer Profile
Mountford
Mountford Estate is a vineyard set on the North West face of the Waipara Valley’s eastern hills, below the Teviotdale range on New Zealand’s South Island. Their vineyard is dubbed ‘the golden mile’, as the aspect gains intense sunlight, aiding ripening. The soils have a high proportion of limestone, adding a fine minerality to the finished wines.
The estate was initially planted in 1991, then expanded over the years to follow. It now covers 9.3 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling at an average altitude of 305ft above sea level. They plant at quite high densities, suitable for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
They operate under organic practices, with real attention to detail in the vineyard. Their philosophy is that wine is made in the vineyard. Their resultant wines are terroir-driven, expressive and elegant.
