Producer Profile
Smith Woodhouse
Smith Woodhouse is a traditional port house with a legacy dating back to 1784, when it was founded by Christopher Smith, a London wine merchant. Over the years, the company developed strong ties to the Douro Valley, becoming known for producing high-quality ports, particularly rich and structured Vintage Ports. Though smaller than many of its competitors, Smith Woodhouse carved out a reputation for consistency and character, often producing wines that over-deliver in quality relative to their more modest profile in the marketplace.
The company’s winemaking is centered around the estate of Quinta da Madalena, located in the Rio Torto Valley, a tributary of the Douro River known for its steep slopes and high-quality vineyards. This quinta provides the backbone for Smith Woodhouse’s ports, offering low yields of concentrated fruit ideal for long-lived wines. Traditional methods - such as foot treading in granite lagares and long maturation in seasoned oak casks - remain at the heart of production, preserving the authenticity and depth that define the house style.
Throughout its history, Smith Woodhouse has remained committed to craftsmanship over scale, often releasing Vintage Ports in years when larger houses do not. This independence reflects the estate’s philosophy: to make wines guided by quality and the specific conditions of each harvest rather than market trends. As part of the Symington Family Estates since the 1970s, Smith Woodhouse continues to benefit from deep viticultural expertise while maintaining its own distinct identity - a house that balances power and finesse in its ports, grounded in the traditions of the Douro.
