Producer Profile
Chateau Ausone
Chateau Ausone is located on Bordeaux’s right bank, adjacent to the town centre of Saint-Emilion. They are perched on the limestone hillside, protected from harsher elements, so unique that Robert Parker once remarked it as “hallowed terroir”.
The estate takes its name from the poet Ausonious, who is believed to have owned a villa where the Chateau stands today. Presently, the estate is owned by the Vauthier family, led by Alain Vauthier and his children Pauline and Edouard. In 1955, they ranked at the very top of the Saint-Emilion classification, but in 2021 they voluntarily withdrew from classification.
Their vineyards cover 7 hectares with equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, alongside a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. They practice organic and biodynamic viticulture for their grand vin as well as their second wine, Chapelle d’Ausone. They are widely recognised for their structured, age-worthy wines.
