Producer Profile
Chateau Nadal Hainaut
The Hainaut family history dates back to the 12th century, and the Chateau Hainaut estate has been in business since 1826. Over the years, and six generations, they have gradually developed the estate into the fantastic production they have today, centred around respect for the land, and the environment.
Jean-Marie Nadal was significant in turning the estate into what it is today. He devoted himself to the terroir, and producing wines which reflect the land. Today, he work alongside his 3 daughters to vinify and age the Chateau’s wines.
They operate under organic principles – as they firmly believe in working the vines in a healthy way. Respect for the land and the environment is at the heart of their mission. Across the estate, they grow Carignan, Muscat a Petit Grains, Muscat of Alexandria, Syrah, Grenache, and many others.
Faced with increasing droughts and water stress affecting crops, it is essential to carefully manage water resources. Taking advantage of the freshness provided by two lakes, they optimise the water naturally present in the soil and stored by the rolled pebbles, while limiting external inputs. Since the best water saving is the absence of irrigation, their cultivation practices are designed to preserve water in the soil through regular ploughing.
The wine cellar was renovated in 2017, equipped with thermos-regulated stainless steel as well as tartaric precipitation tank. This ensures they protect the wines from oxygen, whilst avoiding the use of SO2. They still use some concrete vats for their red wines, as they believe it brings freshness to the wines.
