Producer Profile
Château Trotanoy
Château Trotanoy is one of the most prestigious and historically significant estates in the Pomerol appellation, with a vineyard area of just over 7.5 hectares, making it one of the smaller properties in the region. Located on the Pomerol plateau, the estate benefits from a terroir composed of deep gravel and clay soils with a high concentration of iron-rich material, giving the wines an added complexity and unique mineral character.
The estate's vineyards are planted predominantly with Merlot (around 85%), with the remaining 15% devoted to Cabernet Franc. This blend of grapes, along with the exceptional terroir, contributes to the depth and intensity of Château Trotanoy's wines.
The winemaking at Château Trotanoy is both meticulous and traditional, reflecting the estate’s commitment to producing wines of the highest quality. The harvest is done by hand to ensure only the ripest fruit is selected, and the grapes are fermented in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, which allows for a gentle extraction of flavors and tannins. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for about 18 to 24 months, with a significant portion of the barrels being new oak. This oak aging process imparts a subtle spice and structure to the wine, while still allowing the purity of the fruit to shine through. The estate produces around 2,000 to 3,000 cases of wine annually, adding to its exclusivity and desirability among wine collectors.
Château Trotanoy’s wines are renowned for their exceptional aging potential and complex flavor profile. The wines often display rich, dark fruit characteristics such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry, coupled with earthy, truffle-like notes and a touch of minerality that is typical of the estate’s iron-rich soils. On the palate, Trotanoy wines are full-bodied, with firm, velvety tannins and a structure that allows them to age gracefully for decades. Over time, the wines develop layers of complexity, with tertiary aromas of leather, tobacco, and sous-bois emerging. Château Trotanoy has been under the stewardship of the Moueix family since 1953, and their experience and dedication to quality have ensured that the estate remains one of the most respected and coveted in the Pomerol appellation.
