Tasting Notes

The 2020 Pedesclaux is straightforward and neatly delineated on the nose, displaying mainly black fruit mixed with potpourri and cedar scents. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy, ripe tannins, fine depth and notable cohesion. A judicious touch of spice lingers on the peppery finish. Maybe it lacks a bit of sophistication at the moment, but I enjoy the capsicum-tinged close. It should repay three or four more years in the cellar. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Pedesclaux is a powerhouse. The tannins are a bit less searing than they were en primeur, but only slightly. Dark fruit, chocolate, leather, spice and licorice struggle to emerge. This feels pushed. Pedesclaux is a Pauillac that relies more on power than finesse.

Tasted blind. Black core with purplish rim. Peppery dark fruit and perhaps a hint of smoky reduction. Smells pretty oaky. Tastes pretty oaky, too, but the tannins are fine grained and it s fresh on the finish. Straightforward Pauillac. (JH)
