Producer Profile
Champagne Gamet
A Champagne producer since 1920, Maison Gamet is a family affair, born from unions and successive generations.
In the 90s, Fabienne & Philippe Gamet settled in Mardeuil to perpetuate their know-how and develop the estate. Their children, Marianne & Jean-François joined in 2018. Today, the two generations work together, combining tradition & modernity, wisdom & ambition.
The vineyards of the 8.30 hectare estate are located on either side of the River Marne; the vines are around 50 years old on average. On the right bank, the vineyard takes in the sun, surrounded by the forest which moderates the temperature and provides a degree of shelter. The soil is Clay-Limestone, Sandy-Marl. On the Left Bank, the climate is more serene with richer soils (Clay-Limestone, Chalk and Flint) and full northern exposure, bringing finesse and minerality to the champagnes. Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats and barrels and the wines are blended according to the terroirs, alongside single plots champagne, reflecting the individuality of the parcels. The fermentations are carried out naturally, from a culture of homemade yeast from the plots. The wines remain on the lees for 10 months. Aging takes place in the cellar for between 20 months, and 6 years, depending on the Champagne.
The variation in terroir allows an interesting and diverse range of Champagnes to be produced, from Blanc de Blancs, to Blanc de Noirs and 100% Pinot Meunier Rosé as well as examples of blends of the three grape varietals. Along with the Champagne activity, Inspired by the original farm, where Marianne & Jean-François’ great-grandfather was also a beekeeper & cider maker, Maison Gamet is developing other agricultural trades (Beekeeping, cider farming, cereal farming) in order to promote the know-how and traditions of Champagne-Ardenne. At N&P’s recent Champagne Symposium, held in Birmingham, the wines of Gamet were a real hit, offering real character, impressive quality at a great price!
