Producer Profile
Château Gloria
Château Gloria is a fantastic estate, based in the appellation of Saint-Julien within the Medoc region of Bordeaux. The estate did not feature in the 1855 classification, as it was not founded until nearly 100 years later. It is a relatively new estate by Bordeaux standards, and one that is often noted for its cru-classé quality, but at a reasonable price point.
Henri Martin established the estate in 1942 when he bought a plot pf land and continued to add to it over years, by acquiring plots from numerous classified growths. This included plots from Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton and Gruard-Larose.
The estate is now run by Henri’s daughter Francoise, alongside her husband and children. Since they took over, the estate has undergone significant renovations and investment. In 2015 they completely overhauled the winemaking facilities, and the estate has gone from strength to strength ever since.
Their plantings consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Their soils are primarily composed of gravel, with clay and sand. They harvest by hand, then typically age for 14 in months in 40% new oak.
These wines are recognised for their immediate charm and appeal. They can be enjoyed relatively young, but also do show capacity to age. Although unclassified, the quality of vines and wines is unmistakable.
