Producer Profile
Moorooduc Estate
Established in 1982 by Richard and Jill McIntyre, Moorooduc is a small, family run wine business that has built an enviable reputation for complex and food friendly wines. Moorooduc is rightly regarded as one of the leading lights in Mornington, and one of the finest producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Australia.
Richard had vast experience in making wine, particularly of Pinot Noir. He used this to establish a framework for making classically styled, powerful wine. Their reluctance to take away from the terroir is evident. They really are at the forefront of cool-climate viticulture.
Their winery is based in Mornington Peninsula, an hour’s drive from Melbourne. It is one of Victoria’s southernmost, maritime wine regions. And this family estate was one of the first to plant there. The estate is made up of three vineyards, the main one being McIntyre. The diverse terroir includes cooler lower sites situated on sedimentary soils, and the higher sites sit on southern volcanic soil. This important terroir shines through in the wine.
Their philosophy here is to use top quality fruit that is produced by intensive, hands on work in the vineyard and minimal use of chemicals. The wines are fermented using 100% wild yeasts and minimal intervention to allow them to express the character of their individual sites.
