Producer Profile
Torbreck
Since 1994, Torbreck has been committed to creating exceptional Rhone-style red and white wines, reflecting the very best vineyards in the renowned Barossa Valley. Home to some of the oldest vines on the planet, Torbreck looks to pay homage to the vineyards and the land where they are based. Named one of Top 100 Wines Estates by Robert Parker, this winery is one of Australia’s most distinguished.
The winery was founded by David Powell, who worked as a lumberjack before he fell in love with winemaking. Under his stewardship, the winery began accumulating brilliant scores for wines made from incredibly old vines. The level of quality is evident across their portfolio, from their entry level wines all the way up to their legendary cuvees.
The Barossa Valley is an exceptional wine region in South Australia. It has a long history of winemaking and grape-growing, which is intertwined with European tradition. Its gentle Mediterranean climate makes it suitable for growing grapes such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourverde. Torbreck pays homage to these varieties and their vineyards with minimal intervention. The vines thrive and bear fruit of unique concentration and flavour.
The multi-generational growers, whose descendants arrived here nearly two centuries ago, are the backbone of Torbreck’s winemaking aspirations. Without their knowledge of the seasons and the soil, the fruit would not thrive in such a way. The results are wines of richness and structure which age gracefully.
One of the most revered producers in Australia, now run by Ian Hongell who grew up on a neighbouring vineyard. It is a world-class estate going from strength to strength.
