Producer Profile
ANTINORI
The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries, since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Florentine Winemakers Guild. This began their journey into transforming the Tuscan wine scene.
In 1900, Piero Antinori bought several vineyards in the Chianti Classico region, including 47 hectares at Tignanello. His son Niccolò scandalised Tuscany in 1924 by making a Chianti containing Bordeaux wine varieties. He continued to experiment over the following years, with new blends, types of barrel, temperature control and bottle ageing.
Tignanello truly shook up the wine industry, and the innovations of the Antinori family played a significant role in the Super-Tuscan revolution of the 1970s. This culminated in the release of their first vintage, the 1971.
All throughout its history, spanning 26 generations, the Antinori family has managed the business directly, making innovative and sometimes bold decisions while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment. Today, Marchesi Piero Antinori is the Honorary President and the company is run by his three daughters – Albeira, Alegra and Alessia.
Research and development are an ongoing process both in the vineyards and in the cellars. With tradition, passion and intuition being the three driving forces that have seen Antinori decisively shape Italian viticulture, making them one of the most important winemakers of elite Italian wine.
Through judicious acquisition of vineyards and an uncanny knack for developing iconic wines, Antinori has become Tuscany's - and arguably Italy's - pre-eminent wine producer, with an important presence not only in Tuscany, but also in Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia.
