Producer Profile
Château Calon Ségur
Château Calon Ségur is the most northerly of all the Medoc Grand-Crus Classes, with Third Growth status. They are immediately recognisable for their heart logo, which is because the former owner Marquis de Segur, though he owned such estates as Lafite and Latour, declared “My heart belongs to Calon”.
Their vineyard cover 74 hectares, planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is partly enclosed by a wall, and located just north of the village of St-Estephe. The vines are planted on up to 5 metre deep gravel beds mixed with sand, and some limestone and clay.
The estate produces an excellent Grand Vin, alongside a second wine Marquis de Calon. They produce meaty, concentrated wines which display excellent depth of fruit and superb length.
