The Macallan
The Macallan Distillery needs little introduction to those even with a light knowledge of whisky. From the mid-20th century, the distillery was one of a few pioneers of limited-release single malt expressions, creating collectable ranges at a time when most contemporaries were not. With 2024 marking 200 years of The Macallan, one can expect tremendous celebratory releases to underpin their remarkable anniversary.
The Macallan’s stills are famously small in comparison to other notable Scotch distilleries, leading to a robust spirit character. This paired with the distillery’s penchant for sherry casks and older age-statements leads to a powerful, full-bodied whisky that oozes decadence. The distillery is also one of the few large producers to have long shown a resistance to adding colouring, instead allowing the naturally rich hue of sherry maturation to shine front and centre.
In 2018 the distillery expanded from its humble historic facility to a state-of-the-art establishment that has swiftly become as iconic in its appearance as the whisky is in flavour, sympathetically mimicking the rolling greenery of the Speyside Valley whilst upping capacity to some 15 million litres of alcohol per year, ensuring there is plenty more Macallan for the ever-expanding new generations of enthusiasts.
