Casa Ferreirinha
Casa Ferreirinha is a pioneer brand who led the way in non-fortified Douro wines. With a history of more than 250 years, always in family hands. Knowledge and excellence are just some of the qualities which put them at the forefront of Portuguese wine production.
The origins of Casa Ferreirinha date back to 1952, when Fernando Nicolau de Almeia kick started the quality revolution in Douro still wines. Named after the legendary Porto matriarch Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, one of the formidable widows of the world of wine, Casa Ferreirinha pays homage to the memory of this visionary woman.
Purchased by Sogrape in 1987, Casa Ferreirinha comprises 520 hectares of vineyard in all three Douro sub-regions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. The staggeringly beautiful Quinta da Leda is Casa Ferreirinha’s flagship estate. Located close to the border with Spain, in the far east of the Douro Superior, it is the source of grapes for many of Casa Ferreirinha’s top wines.
They are based the Douro Valley, a region most recognised for their production of Port. But the mountainous terrain, Douro River, and scorching summers, make for the ideal climate for all wine production. More than 110 grape varieties are grown here, and Casa Ferreirinha are one of the many producers who cherish this exceptional terroir.
Their philosophy is to combine science and technology, with dedication and passion to create the best wines possible. Luis Sottomayor joined the team as winemaker in 1989. His experience and knowledge make him the perfect fit for leading the way in creating some of the Douro’s finest wines. Their wines show vibrant freshness, beautiful texture and depth.
