Chateau Belair-Monange (formerly known as Chateau Belair), is a Grand Cru Classe B estate in the appellation of Saint-Emilion. This estate has historically been considered as one of the leading estates of the right bank of Bordeaux. Their wines are recognised for their minerality, concentration, balance and length.
The history of the Chateau dates all the way back to the 17th Century. It was owned by the Canolle de Lescours family for over 200 years, with the vineyard beginning to flourish in the 18th Century. Their reputation is long-standing, for example, at the time of the French Revolution, their wines were selling at 3 times the price of other Saint-Emilion Grand Vins.
The vineyard covers 23.5 hectares of parcels on the renowned limestone plateau. The vineyards are mostly planted with Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The suppleness of Merlot brings a harmonious balance to the terroirs dominant minerality.
Each parcel is meticulously hand-harvested, then sorted and destemmed. The grapes are vinified in small lots to preserve the character of each parcel. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, sourced from a small group of coopers based on the characteristics of the vintage. The proportion of the new barrels is limited to 50% to preserve purity of fruit. The results are wines with great ageing potential, yet they can be enjoyed in their youth.
