Château de Sales
Château de Sales is one of the oldest and most esteemed estates in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, with a history dating back to the 16th century. It is a family-owned winery, currently managed by the de Coninck family, who have had ownership for several generations. The estate is situated on the plateau of Pomerol, with vineyards that stretch across approximately 46 hectares, making it one of the larger properties in the region.
Its terroir is diverse, with a combination of clay and gravel soils that contribute to the cultivation of exceptional Merlot, the dominant grape variety grown on the estate. A small proportion of Cabernet Franc is also planted, adding complexity and depth to the final wine.
The wine produced by Château de Sales is known for its consistent quality and elegance, with an emphasis on producing wines that showcase the rich, ripe fruit characteristic of Pomerol. The estate’s wines typically feature a rich bouquet of black fruits, such as blackberries and plums, along with earthy, spicy notes, which reflect the unique terroir. On the palate, the wines are smooth and round, with soft tannins that provide structure without being overpowering. The careful attention to vineyard management and the use of traditional winemaking techniques ensure that each vintage expresses both the character of the estate and the classic qualities of Pomerol wines.
Château de Sales is unique in that it maintains a more traditional approach to both viticulture and winemaking. The estate relies on sustainable farming practices to protect the environment and ensure the long-term health of its vineyards. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged in a combination of French oak barrels, allowing for a delicate balance of oak influence and fruit expression. The result is a wine that offers both immediate pleasure and significant aging potential, making it a sought-after choice among wine collectors. Château de Sales consistently produces wines that are well-regarded by critics, and it is considered a cornerstone of the Pomerol region, offering a taste of Bordeaux’s prestigious winemaking heritage.
