Chateau Gazin has a long history, dating back to the 18th Century, but in recent years they have quickly garnered a reputation from one of Pomerol’s up-and-coming estates. With the appointment of Nicolas de Bailliencourt, and his radical overhaul of the vineyard and winemaking process, they have started to receive more and more praise for their wines.
Their vineyards cover 24 hectares on a single stretch of the Pomerol plateau, with 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. But Bailliencourt has stated that in coming years they will increase plantings of the Cabernets due to the warming climate. Presently 1/5 of the vineyard is farmed organically, but they intend to gradually increase to 100%.
Gazin is often regarded as the ‘Left Bank of Pomerols’ – their wines can take up to 10 years to be to ready to drink. However, more recent vintages have seen 50% malolactic fermentation in new oak, softening the tannins and thus making the wines more approachable.
