Glen Garioch 12 Year Old – First Fill Oloroso Sherry Quarter Cask (James Eadie)
Venture just a dozen miles Northwest of Aberdeen and you'll find yourself in Meldrum, home to the Glen Garioch distillery (pronounced "glen geeuh-ree"). Glen Garioch is very much a member of the old guard in Scotch, established in 1797, a birth year shared with Nickolls & Perks, yet it is fair to say the distillery is quite under-represented in modern times. Thankfully, the reliable folks at James Eadie have surfaced this excellent expression for us all to enjoy: a 12 year old Glen Garioch initially matured in ex-bourbon casks and then treated to a 6-month finish in a first fill Oloroso sherry quarter cask. These roughly 100-litre casks offer far more wood contact with the maturing spirit, imparting the richness of the cask much more quickly. Melding with the fusty style of Glen Garioch malt, the whisky carries dunnage notes and burnt butter, with the palate a mix of freshness and doughy characters (see our tasting notes section below for a full breakdown). A single cask expression, bottled at cask strength.
