2019 A.A. Badenhorst, Secateurs Red, Swartland
AA Badenhorst Family Wines are produced in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The winery comprises 180ha of old bushvines grown in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.

The property is owned by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhors who have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930's to make natural wines in the traditional manner.
The vineyards comprise mostly old bushvines planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s to Chenin Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache. The vines are unirrigated and farmed as biologically as possible.

Grapes are whole bunch-handled so no crushing or destemming takes place. The whites are transferred directly to old casks or into concrete tanks for fermentation and ageing.
The red grapes are fermented in concrete tanks and open wooden kuipe. The post fermentation maceration is lengthy – up to 4 months -whereafter the wines are put to cask or 4000L foudres. No additions are done to the grapes other than sulphur before and after fermentation.

The Secateurs Red Blend captivates with expressive notes of blackcurrants and blackberries, offering a balanced palate with moderate acidity for a pleasantly soft mouthfeel. The wine finishes with lasting notes of blueberry, black currant, and subtle mineral notes from the granite-rich soils.

AA Badenhorst Family Wines, situated in South Africa's Swartland appellation, spans 180ha with old bushvines on the Paardeberg Mountain.

Owned by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst, they revived a neglected 1930s cellar for traditional winemaking. The vineyards boast mainly 1950s-60s Chenin Blanc, Cinsault, and Grenache bushvines, cultivated without irrigation in a biologically friendly manner.

Grapes undergo whole bunch handling, whites fermenting in old casks or concrete tanks, while reds ferment in concrete tanks and open wooden kuipe with a lengthy post-fermentation maceration.
Minimal intervention is a hallmark, with only sulphur added before and after fermentation.

2021 BLANKbottle, Kortpad Kaptoe, Stellenbosch
Blankbottle is owned by Pieter Walser, one of the most creative winemakers. He doesn’t own any vineyards but instead he searches every corner of South Africa for grapes. Now, he has a close relationship with farmers from 70 plots and manages to make over 20 wines from 35 grape varieties. Every wine from Pieter tells a real story. In August 2011, on a farm somewhere between Darling and Hopefield on the West Coast of South Africa, I was visiting a block of grapes, Carignan. I received a SMS from someone who needed me to be in Cape Town within the next hour. Being in the middle of nowhere, I asked the farmer the quickest way to Cape Town. In Afrikaans (one of the 11 official languages of South Africa), the "Kortpad Kaaptoe". He said that I needed to drive towards the Carignan, past the Shiraz and Fernao Pirez...."The FERNAO WHAT???", I asked him? "Fernao Pirez" he replied. Bush vines, unirrigated, planted by his grandfather 38 years before. So, on my shor

2021 BLANKbottle, The Spaniard, Western Cape
Blankbottle is owned by Pieter Walser, one of the most creative winemakers. He doesn’t own any vineyards but instead he searches every corner of South Africa for grapes. Now, he has a close relationship with farmers from 70 plots and manages to make over 20 wines from 35 grape varieties. Every wine from Pieter tells a real story.

Cutting a long story short, Pieter Walser very much likes native Spanish grapes such as Mourvedre, Garnacha, Carignan, Cinsault and others. In 2007 he started to produce a wine with only Mourvedre grapes, this Mourvedre grows from a beautiful little bush vine system in Swartland vineyard - planted in pure rugged Schist in the Riebeeck mountains.

Pieter was restricted to buying 1 ton of fruit, which meant only 3 barrels of wine were produced in 2021. Thirty percent of the wine was aged in new oak barrels, producing soft, juicy roundness.

The annual production of this cuvee is only 1373 bottles.

2020 Keermont, Terrasse, Stellenbosch
In 2003 Mark and Monica Wraith bought 2 adjacent farms which now form Keermont Vineyards.
Their aim is to produce some wines which reflect the small vineyards from where the grapes are picked. Nowadays they use some organic practices.

Terrasse is a barrel fermented white blend which derives its name from the terraced vineyards leading up the mountains on the estate.
This wine is based on Chenin blanc (39%) with Sauvignon Blanc (34%), Chardonnay (13%) and Viognier (14%) grape.
The grapes are hand harvested and vinified separately. The white wine is fermented by indigenous yeast in French oak barrels and spends 12 months maturing on the lees. The bottling is by hand without filtration. Less than 10 000 bottles were produced in 2018.

Producer notes: A polished light-yellow gold colour, this wine has a complex bouquet of prominent citrus and stone fruit with notes of vanilla, freshly green cut apple, Frangipane flowers, and a hint of cut grass and earthiness. The win

Fermentation lasted seven days, after which the wine was pressed off the skins and transferred to old French and American barrels for malolactic fermentation and 14 months ageing The Mourvedre (also called Mataro in Australia, Monastrell in Jumilla) has a dark colour due to the thick skin. Some intense flavour of dark fruit, smoky, pencil sharper, black pepper, meaty and leather with a great full smooth tannins "Without [Charles] the Swartland would still be regarded as a rural backwater" wrote Tim Atkin, who awarded the winery 'Cru Bourgeois' status in his South Africa Classification in 2018.

The wine leaves a lasting and refreshing aftertaste. 2021 Vergelegen, Semillon Straw Wine, Stellenbosch
The nose is filled with abundant, ripe tropical fruit aromas, yet the wine maintains its vibrancy and allure thanks to its remarkable acidity and refreshing palate. To fully appreciate its qualities, it's recommended to serve this wine well chilled, at a temperature between 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. The grapes for this wine were carefully harvested, with some left to dry on the vines or wooden pallets until they reached the desired sugar concentration. These grapes were then processed, without crushing or de-stemming, and fermented with their skins in plastic bins. This unique approach helped break down cell tissue and extract slightly higher quantities of juice. The resulting sweet juice was subsequently transferred to old barrels to complete the alcoholic fermentation process. The wine was then aged for a period of 15 months in old oak barrels.COMPOSITION: This wine is crafted exclusively from 100% Semillon grapes.MATURATION: While this wine is delightful to enj

A A Badenhorst is well known in South Africa for producing great wine with character.Adi is of the third generation and a talented winemaker. He has worked in the Rhone Valley, New Zealand and then South Africa. Along with his cousin he bought a humble vineyard in Paardeberg with a run down winery. The Secateur range offers a great expression of grape varieties and good value for money. The Chenin Blanc 2021 is outstanding.Vinification: The grapes are hand picked with great care and chilled overnight in a cold room. The following day they are (whole bunch) pressed in a settling tank. These vineyards are picked over a period of 12 days and each day fresh juice is added to the already fermenting tanks –this extends the alcoholic fermentation by about 20 days but is also very important in the complete integration of the wine as all the various vineyards or components are fermented together. Some of the juice is also fermented in older casks and big f

Small parcels of selected fruit are sourced from various vineyards on  Kalmoesfontein Farm, specifically the Paardeberg. From the old vineyard, the grapes are mainly Chenin Blanc and several other grapes.

The grapes are cooled down over night and most of them are pressed together (whole bunches) the next morning. The juice is then transferred to old casks for co-fermentation and maturation. A small percentage of the grapes are picked a bit earlier for some acidity but the rest are picked at what is reckoned the right time for good ripeness and flavour.

2020 Fairview, Pinotage, Paarl
Pinotage is a classic South African variety and originates from a 1925 cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known as Hermitage in South Africa). The Fairview Pinotage was primarily harvested from bush vines in Malmesbury and Agter-Paarl, some of which are over 25 years old. These older vineyards are dry farmed and the vines grow on deep soils. This is supplemented by fruit from an irrigated, younger, trellised vineyard at Fairview.
