2020 Ornellaia, Bolgheri
VM96/100
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is one of the original Super Tuscan producers, blending Bordeaux varieties in an area dominated by Sangiovese, and producing magnificent wines.

Former estate director Axel Heinz called 2020 ‘a classic Ornellaia,’ and picked the theme of ‘La Proporzione‘ (proportion) to describe its character. Comprised of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc & 5% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Ornellaia is superb and as Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate states "has a beautiful quality of fruit and oak that speaks to the very best of Italian winemaking." A wine not to be missed.

Available for delivery from Autumn 2023.

2021 Ornellaia, Bolgheri

53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot

The Ornellaia 2021 Vintage offers all the richness and plushness you could want in a great, and memorable Tuscan red.
With estate director Marco Balsimelli noting that the vintage is a "very expressive and complex wine, with all the hallmarks of one of the great vintages from Ornellaia".
Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, it is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, liquorice, plum, and dried herbs abound. Tannins are beautifully integrated, as the French oak.

Sassicaia was granted status as an independent wine type and subzone under Bolgheri DOC in 1994.
The Tuscan wine takes its name from the stony soil from which it comes.

The manual harvest followed by meticulous selection of the grapes through a sorting table, to eliminate impurities and any presence of imperfections.
Gentle pressing avoided excessive tannin extraction.
The alcoholic fermentation was spontaneous, with no addition of external yeasts.
Frequent délestage and pumping over provided good aromatic extraction and freshness.
Malolactic fermentations took place in steel, after decanting to clean the musts, the wine was aged for just over 2 years in oak barriques using 45% new wood, 45% first passage and 10% second passage.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and a maximum of 20% Cabernet Franc, the wine has achieved a revered status, particularly following an historic tasting in London in 1978, where the 1972 vintage outshone top Bordeaux wines!

“We believe that Sassicaia is one of the greatest wine creations of the century. It also happens to be simply wonderful to drink. May it thrive through the new millennium.”
