Investment Wines
As connoisseurs and collectors chase down the world's finest wines, they become more and more scarce. With that prices can only go one way. Here are some that are already in big demand or are very likely to be soon.

Decanter 98/100
“This vintage delivers a beautiful, classic style of Canon that is right at the top of what St-Émilion can offer. Compact and dense without being hard, it is finely structured both in terms of the texture of the cassis and blackberry fruits and in the shape of the tannins.
It demonstrates a clear minerality and a feather-brushing of violet notes. This is less obviously sexy than 2015, but is a wine that offers a masterclass in what limestone terroir can convey - salinity, succulence, hints of austerity and reserves of power.
I retasted it a few times, and the main take away of what to expect is layers of flavour and huge persistency. The details of how they worked the vintage are an added bonus to understanding how they achieved this result. When it started getting hot and dry, they left all green cover on the vines, and did no green harvesting except tidying up in September. The result was loading the vines to avoid over-concentration.”

2014 Chateau Canon Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
VM94+RP94JR18
The Château Canon 2014 is a blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the estate moving towards the latter in terms of its new plantings, which will possibly see 40% in 15 or 20 years time. It was picked from 22 September until 6 October for the Merlot and three days later for the Cabernet Franc, matured in around 80% new oak. It has a glorious bouquet with great purity and delineation: raspberry, wild strawberry and small red cherries, very pure and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual ripe, filigree tannin, just the right amount of salinity, precise and mineral-rich towards the exquisite, pure and "classic" finish. This is outstanding for the vintage – a sublime Château Canon that might dare rank alongside the 2009 and 2010. If this represents the valedictory Canon from John Kolasa, then what a way to bow out. 93-95/100 Neal Martin. Decanter 17.75/20

2019 was not a straight forward vintage at D'Yquem, however the resulting wine is sensational...
“The 2019 is slightly more powerful than 2018, people may think because there are fewer pickings, we don’t have the complexity, but this is not necessarily an indicator of complexity. The heart of the vintage was picked in those seven days in October. We felt this vintage needed three months longer in barrel, which is why we are releasing in March.” Pierre Lurton CEO of Château D'Yquem
Interestingly, as well as having three extra months in barrel, the 2019 D'Yquem unusually has a larger proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, comprising 45% of the final blend. Ordinarily Sauvignon Blanc would account for only 20-30%.
Lisa Perotti Brown MW from The Wine independent describes the addition of extra Sauvignon Blanc as a shrewd move:
"Have to hand it to them; for this richer vintage, I think the more significant proportion of Sauvignon works beautifully to in

Its amazing to visit this vineyard located as it is in a surprisingly urban location inside the south west city perimeter. The oldest of the first growths, the vineyard is made up of roughly equal percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with about ten percent Cabernet Franc, oh and one percent Petit Verdot. The wines are often restrained and aristocratic in their youth opening up to reveal incredible complexity with beautifully spicy tabacco and cedar aromas. Truly outstanding.

Under the tutelage of Eric Kohler, Bruno Prats and of course Saskia de Rothschild, 2020 saw Ch. Lafite's first vintage operating 100% organically. 2020 was heralded by Neal Martin, Lisa Perrotti-Brown & Jane Anson, with all three critics scoring the first growth 96-98/100.
Vintages of similar quality are today (14/01/23) trading at considerably higher prices (2019 £3700 per 6/75cl, 2018 £3900 per 6/75cl) than the 2020. This, together with likely price increases during the 2022 vintage EP campaign suggests that the 2020 has significant investment potential...

One of the five first growths of Bordeaux, and probably the most famous of them all. Located right at the northern limit of Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend with the soil made up of fine deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sand on a subsoil of tertiary limestone. It is well-drained and well-exposed to the sun. The finesse and elegance at Lafite is undeniable.
