2021 Aalto, PS, Ribera del Duero DO
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines, 60 to 90 years old, from selected plots in La Horra and La Aguilera. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch.
Intense purple colour. Black fruits together with spicy nuances displayed in the glass confer on this wine complexity and elegance on the nose. It is fresh on the mouth; its soft and silky tannins give it great intensity and volume. The wine shows solid core of small, black forest fruit, concentrated and rich without being jammy. As with regular Aalto, tannins are very fine and currently hiding behind soft wood.
The PS is not made every year, as their mission is to only create a wine of the highest, most consistent quality. This is a proper "Vin de Garde" which will need 3-4 years in the bottle to harmonize - there is a lot there to harmonize and if you have the patience, you will be amply rewarded.

2021 Aalto, Ribera del Duero DO
VM94/100
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines, 40 to 80 years old, from nine different villages in the province of Burgos and Valladolid. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch.

This wine shows an elegant purple colour in the glass. On the nose it expresses the aromatic potential of the Tinta Fino with its red fruits and liquorice nuances. The barrel ageing has conferred spicy notes. Notes are quite consistent displaying classic Aalto richness and structure. Right now, there is still fair bit of soft wood on the nose wrapped in deep dark late summer fruit. The tannins are so finely polished that it feels quite creamy on the palate. What stands out in 2021 is juicy freshness.
This wine will easily evolve over the next 5-6 years, and is certainly excellent value for a wine scoring 94 points.

2021 Altocedro, La Consulta Ano Cero Tempranillo, Uco Valley
Great to see a Tempranillo grape in La Consulta vineyard (Mendoza). Actually, this grape is the second to be produced in this area, possibly due to the Spanish colonisation many times ago. Karim (winemaker) and his team selected the Tempranillo from 30 year old vines. The whole bunch of vines are fermented in small concrete vats. Then 30% of the production is aged in American oak barrels for 8-10 months.

During its youth, the wine is fruity (blackberries and other black fruit) and well balanced between the body and the acidity. The tannins are smooth with an elegant texture.

This wine could be paired with most lamb dishes, pork (especially good with Spanish style pork and beans), roasted red peppers, tagines, roast game birds and hard sheep’s cheeses like Manchego.

2021 Anne-Francoise Gros, Ladoix, La Toppe d’Avignon
Derived from a small plot located at the hill's foothills by the village, the grapes undergo destemming without crushing. Following a brief and cool maceration, the fermentation process involves more pumping over than punching down, resulting in concentrated juice.

"Sappy plums and raspberries on the nose. Retaining its violet florality, this has very pure raspberry fruit and seamless tannins, with just a hint of green spice on the back."

2021 Araldica, Chardonnay, Piedmont
A classy example of cool-climate Italian Chardonnay from the Monferatto hills in eastern Piemonte, North-West Italy.

The wine shows crisp fresh citrus fruit on the nose with a hint of green apple. On the palate it has appealing stone fruit characters, minerality in the background, a lemony finish and fresh acidity.

2021 Au Bon Climat, Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County
Rather than the big, bold Cabernet Sauvignons that much of California is known for, Au Bon Climat crafts wines with restrained Burgundian-style flair. Their wines show nuance, class and balance, while simultaneously celebrating the hallmarks of the local terroir.
Classic Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir. It is a deeply coloured, fruit forward Pinot with a nose of spiced cranberry, strawberry and hibiscus. The abundance of fruit continues on the palate showing plum, dark cherry, and cranberry with nuances of anise, tea and clove

2021 Au Bon Climat, Wild Boy Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County
From one of California’s top-rated vineyards, this outstanding Chardonnay displays fleshy brioche and ripe citrus flavours. Made in more of a Burgundian style rather than the big, rich, overly oaked examples that are becoming past fashionable. Beautifully constructed, fresh pear and white peach scents are sharpened by citrus notes. Great food wine, chicken or creamy cheeses pair especially well.

2021 Cabaret Frank Cabernet Franc, Lodi
Bright notes of juicy red fruits are complimented by blackcurrant leaf notes so typical of Cabernet Franc. Smooth, medium bodied and easy drinking wine that strikes a lovely balance with its blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit characters coupled with classic varietal leafy tones.

Harvested from the largest Caberet Franc vineyard in the world, in Lodi Californa, the grapes used are 35 years old. The use of wood or oak has been removed here in order to let the flavours of the Cabernet Franc dominate.

This is a smooth easy drinking wine that will match particularly well with vegetarian dishes, but can of course also be matched with lighter meats such as chicken.
A great value and versatile wine, suitable for our vegetarian and vegan customers.
