Dating back to 1879, Barton is the oldest fully-operating distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. The distillery originally went under the name of Thomas S Moore, the distillery's founder. The stills were silenced by prohibition in 1920, but later, in 1933, fired once more when the act was repealed in the 21st Amendment. Thomas Moore's son, Con Moore, led the reopening, but later sold the distillery, whereupon it was renamed to the Barton Distillery. Owners would vacillate over the name in years to come, renaming back to Tom Moore distillery in 2008 and back once more to Barton in 2009, when Sazerac purchased the company.
In 2018, disaster struck. A warehouse partly collapsed, annihilating 9,000 barrels of bourbon. The distillery desperately tried to recover the remaining intact barrels, only to be met with further catastrophe two weeks later when the remaining half of the warehouse collapsed, destroying a further 9,000 barrels. The devastation led to an enormous rebuild of the Barton warehousing, and by 2021, the first warehouse to be built on the site in 63 years was commissioned, later followed by two more.
The expansion cost the distillery $25 million, resulting in a 25% increase in the distillery's barrel capacity.
The distillery is known for two brands of American whiskey: Very Old Barton, a Kentucky staple, but perhaps more notably, 1792, a high-rye bourbon with a powerful palate.
