Chateau Angelus

The vineyard of Château Angélus is situated in a natural amphitheatre overlooked by the three Saint-Emilion churches. In the middle of this special site, sounds were amplified and the angelus church bells could be heard ringing in the morning, at midday and in the evening. They cadenced the working day in the vineyards and villages, calling the men and women to stop their labours for a few minutes and pray. Thus, the bell became the focal point of their distinctive label.

Their 39 hectares of vines sit on a perfect southerly-exposed slope. Cabernet Franc is grown at the bottom, where the soils are sandier and warmer; Merlot is grown in the limestone-rich clay soils at the top of the slope. The Angélus style results from the combination of bold decisions on vine varieties and an outstanding terroir. It is also a composition re-crafted every year in a continuous quest for excellence.

The wines are slow to open up, but they are amongst the most intriguing and the most refined. Their colour becomes more intense during ageing, the menthol, spicy aromas are impressively elegant and subtle. The tannins are dense, but silky and bring the necessary fresh notes to achieve overall balance. Cabernet Franc enhances the ageing of the greatest wines.

They produce around 10,000 cases of their Grand Vin annually. The château also produces a second wine named Carillon d’Angélus (since 1987) and a third wine, No. 3 d’Angélus.

They have risen to become one of the leading estates in Saint-Emilion, and one of the finest in Bordeaux. They are consistently praised by critics, with Robert Parker regarding it as “one of the great, shining success stories and superstar estates of Saint-Emilion and all of Bordeaux”.
