Château Haut-Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate situated within Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s left bank. They are adjacent to the brooder with St-Julien, and neighbour Pichon-Lalande and Grand Puy Lacoste. It was recently acquired by the Cazes family, with vast improvement underway, this is certainly an estate to watch.
It was historically a part of Château Batailley, but the estate was split when brothers François and Michel Borie broke up their holdings to avoid inheritance disputes in 1942. This smaller portion, was taken by François, who added parcels from Duhart-Milon, increasing the size of Haut-Batailley. It was later sold to the Cazes family, who invested in more modern winemaking facilities, planted new parcels, and introduced a second wine. With these changes, they are going from strength to strength.
The vineyards cover 22 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside small proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This result is a wine which is quite typical of the region. The vines are planted on deep gravel beds over limestone. The resultant wine is harmonious, elegant, with a fine tannic structure that will develop over time.
