2021 A.A. Badenhorst, Secateurs Red, Swartland
AA Badenhorst Family Wines, situated in South Africa's Swartland appellation, spans 180ha with old bushvines on the Paardeberg Mountain.

Owned by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst, they revived a neglected 1930s cellar for traditional winemaking. The vineyards boast mainly 1950s-60s Chenin Blanc, Cinsault, and Grenache bushvines, cultivated without irrigation in a biologically friendly manner.

Grapes undergo whole bunch handling, whites fermenting in old casks or concrete tanks, while reds ferment in concrete tanks and open wooden kuipe with a lengthy post-fermentation maceration.
Minimal intervention is a hallmark, with only sulphur added before and after fermentation.

The Secateurs Red Blend captivates with expressive notes of blackcurrants and blackberries, offering a balanced palate with moderate acidity for a pleasantly soft mouthfeel. The wine finishes with lasting notes of blueberry, black currant, and subtle mineral notes from the granite-rich soils.

2021 Aalto, PS, Ribera del Duero DO
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines, 60 to 90 years old, from selected plots in La Horra and La Aguilera. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch.
Intense purple colour. Black fruits together with spicy nuances displayed in the glass confer on this wine complexity and elegance on the nose. It is fresh on the mouth; its soft and silky tannins give it great intensity and volume. The wine shows solid core of small, black forest fruit, concentrated and rich without being jammy. As with regular Aalto, tannins are very fine and currently hiding behind soft wood.
The PS is not made every year, as their mission is to only create a wine of the highest, most consistent quality. This is a proper "Vin de Garde" which will need 3-4 years in the bottle to harmonize - there is a lot there to harmonize and if you have the patience, you will be amply rewarded.

2021 Aalto, Ribera del Duero DO
VM94/100
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines, 40 to 80 years old, from nine different villages in the province of Burgos and Valladolid. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch.

This wine shows an elegant purple colour in the glass. On the nose it expresses the aromatic potential of the Tinta Fino with its red fruits and liquorice nuances. The barrel ageing has conferred spicy notes. Notes are quite consistent displaying classic Aalto richness and structure. Right now, there is still fair bit of soft wood on the nose wrapped in deep dark late summer fruit. The tannins are so finely polished that it feels quite creamy on the palate. What stands out in 2021 is juicy freshness.
This wine will easily evolve over the next 5-6 years, and is certainly excellent value for a wine scoring 94 points.

2019 Alma das Donas, Almanova Mencia, Ribeira Sacra
The Mencia vines are over 50 years old and produce a great example of a wine from this Spanish grape. The wine has lovely red fruit notes of cherry and cranberry with fine tannins. It goes well with steak, grilled lamb or mushroom risotto.
The Alma das Donas is a small winery of 3 hectares of steeply terraced vines above the River Sil meaning the grapes can only be harvested by hand.

Producer notes: “The Merlots give rise to wines full of power, exuberance, and body. The Cabernets developed a certain coolness and reserve, leading to wines of rare distinction. It is this uncommon coupling that has seen 2019 enter the exclusive club of truly exceptional vintages”.

2018 Altocedro, La Consulta Ano Cero Tempranillo, Uco Valley
Great to see a Tempranillo grape in La Consulta vineyard (Mendoza). Actually, this grape is the second to be produced in this area, possibly due to the Spanish colonisation many times ago. Karim (winemaker) and his team selected the Tempranillo from 30 year old vines. The whole bunch of vines are fermented in small concrete vats. Then 30% of the production is aged in American oak barrels for 8-10 months.

During its youth, the wine is fruity (blackberries and other black fruit) and well balanced between the body and the acidity. The tannins are smooth with an elegant texture.

This wine could be paired with most lamb dishes, pork (especially good with Spanish style pork and beans), roasted red peppers, tagines, roast game birds and hard sheep’s cheeses like Manchego.

2021 Anne-Francoise Gros, Ladoix, La Toppe d’Avignon
Derived from a small plot located at the hill's foothills by the village, the grapes undergo destemming without crushing. Following a brief and cool maceration, the fermentation process involves more pumping over than punching down, resulting in concentrated juice.

"Sappy plums and raspberries on the nose. Retaining its violet florality, this has very pure raspberry fruit and seamless tannins, with just a hint of green spice on the back."

2010 Antinori, Solaia, IGT
VM98RP97
The 2010 Solaia is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. This is a beautiful vintage for Solaia which is only produced when the conditions are excellent. The fruit is particularly marked by warm days and cool nights, enhancing the aromatics and freshness in the wine.
Solaia, a twenty hectare (50 acre) vineyard of the Tignanello estate with a southwestern exposure, is situated at 350-400 meters (1175-1325 feet) above sea level on a soil of calcareous rock (known as "alberese in Tuscany). The Marchesi Antinori firm produced this wine for the first time in the 1978 vintage with an initial blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, a blend repeated again in 1979. In the following vintages 20% of Sangiovese was added to the Cabernet grapes and the ratio of Cabernet Franc to Cabernet Sauvignon was changed in order to create a wine which has now become definitive in its various composing elements.

2014 Arrocal, Ribera del Duero, Crianza Meloso
One of Spain's top red wine–producing regions, Ribera del Duero is located in the northwest of the country, about 160km north of Madrid or Ribera del Duero 125 km south-west of Rioja.

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with a continental influence and an extreme nature; it boasts dry summers, long and harsh winters, low rainfall (400-500 mm/year average) and a large difference in temperatures throughout the year (from -20°C to 42°C ).
This results in grapes that are small in size, with thick skins, that have benefited from an optimal slow and late ripening period leading to concentrated flavours.

Bodega Arrocal is a family owned winery, run by Rosa Arroyo and Moisés Calvo, who are native to the area.

AGE OF THE VINEYARD: 30 years. ALTITUDE: 830 meters sea level.
VARIETY: 100% Tinto Fino. (Tempranillo)
HARVEST: Manual in 16 Kg boxes and selection table.
Aging: 12 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels and 12 months ageing in the bottle.
Aromas and flavours of black and forest fruits - blueberries, blackberries and plums, with spicy touches such as vanilla, nutmeg and cloves.
This Crianza is nicely balanced, with toasted and balsamic nuances of black liquorice and forest floor.
Harmonious and velvety tannins, which provide structure and complexity.

Serve at around 14°C with meat stews cheese platters, fatty fish, roasted vegetables and rice or pasta dishes.

2020 Bardos, Ribera del Duero, Romantica
Bodega Bardos located in Quintanilla de Onésimo in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, this is a characteristically robust red, made principally from Tempranillo grapes with the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon to the blend.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of just under 1000 metres above sea level and the grapes are hand harvested.
The high diurnal range helps to maintain the grapes’ freshness alongside the full-bodied nature of this wine.

The result is a nicely balanced Crianza, with the effect of 14 months’ maturation in used oak adding delicious sweet spices to the rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, bramble, Morello cherry, with a hint of tobacco and leather.

2019 Barolo Agricola Marrone Piedmont
Established in the early part of the 20th Century the winery now includes the fourth generation of the Marrone family, who manage their vineyards with care. (All vineyard management operations are carried out exclusively by hand and no herbicides are used)

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Nebbiolo from vines with an average age of 35-40 years, growing at 300 – 350m above sea level.
Fermentation takes place at 28°C for 30 days. Malolactic fermentation in large barrels of 30 Hl (50%) and barrique (50%).

“Perfumed, in a delicate, haunting way. Then deeply earthy: mushrooms, sous bois, tart cherry and truffle. Flavours entwined with tannins that feel gossamer fine but there are so many of them that they cling to the fruit like a film of fine chalk dust. Tamarind on the finish. Determined but elegant. A slender, long-necked wine with a set jaw.”

2019 Barolo Alasia Piemonte
Araldica's premier Barolo, sourced from carefully chosen vineyards, is a wine that is both approachable and richly flavoured.

The grapes, meticulously hand-harvested, undergo a three-year maturation process in 50hl Slavonian oak casks. Following this, the wine is gently racked from oak and fined, resulting in a fine and expressive style that encapsulates Barolo's classic blend of mature, lightly floral aromas alongside richness and structure.

The wine boasts dark plum, leather, and delicate violet notes, complemented by hints of sweet spice.
This full-bodied red is characterized by its firmness and ripeness, delivering powerful flavours that are well-balanced by ripe tannins, intricate savoury undertones, and a lingering finish. For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant this Barolo and pair it with roasted red meats and game.
