Château Branaire-Ducru
Château Branaire-Ducru is a renowned Fourth Growth estate, located within the commune of St-Julien, on Bordeaux’s left bank. They are recognised for their stronghold of tradition and innovation, rooted in history yet marked by innovation. The chateau is located on the Southern border of the appellation, with the vineyards spread throughout St-Julien, covering approximately 50 hectares in total.
The origins of Château Branaire-Ducru date back to 1680, when Jean-Baptiste Braneyre recognised the potential of the terroir and its deep, gravel soils. He acquired the 60 hectare estate, and since then they have become one of the most consistent, and highly-regarded Fourth Growth estates.
In 1988, Patrick Maroteaux took over the estate, bringing a fresh perspective and determination to elevate their wines. It was later taken over by his son, Francois-Xavier in 2017. They focused on creating consistent, classic wines majoring on notes of cassis, bilberry and tobacco notes.
The gravel terroir is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard increased in size by 10 hectares under the control of Maroteaux family.
Expect wines of aromatic integrity. They age beautifully, without ever being overly powerful. New oak usage is kept to 60% maximum, allowing for freshness and purity of expression.
