Producer Profile
Chateau Phelan Segur
Phelan Segur is one of Bordeaux's most historic estates, situated in the northern Médoc appellation of Saint-Estèphe. Founded in the early nineteenth century and named after its creator, Bernard Phelan, an Irish wine merchant, and the Ségur family, who once owned part of the estate, the château has long been recognised for producing wines that combine the power and structure characteristic of Saint-Estèphe with notable elegance and refinement.
The vineyard extends across some of the appellation's finest gravelly soils, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Benefiting from its proximity to the Gironde estuary, Phelan Segur enjoys a favourable microclimate that contributes to consistent ripening and balanced fruit expression. Careful vineyard management and significant investment in both viticulture and winemaking have further enhanced the estate's reputation in recent decades.
Today, Phelan Segur produces wines celebrated for their depth, freshness and ageing potential. Their grand vin typically displays aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite and spice, supported by finely structured tannins and impressive precision. Combining classic Médoc character with an increasingly polished style, Phelan Segur has become one of Saint-Estèphe's most admired properties and offers outstanding value among Bordeaux's leading crus.
