Producer Profile
Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle was once described by renowned critic Jancis Robinson, as “intensely seductive”. These wines have a deservedly high reputation. Located within the commune of St-Julien, the estate was classified as a Fourth Growth estate in the 1855 Classification, and has remained consistent ever since.
The estate covers a huge 250 hectares, with 90 hectares under vine, in the south of the St-Julien appellation. Planting is at 8,300-10,000 vines/ha, which reflects the slightly higher proportion of clay in this stretch. They also use a high proportion of Merlot, compared with other estates in the region, however they are slowly increasing the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon.
They are focused on sustainable agriculture, and stopped use of chemical herbicides completely in 2005. One-third of the land is now farmed organically, and they are working on improving biodiversity across the property. Showing they are certainly a forward-thinking, innovative estate.
