Producer Profile
Chateau Haut-Brion
Chateau Haut-Brion, is one of the highly-regarded First Growth producers, under the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It differs, from the other First Growth estates due to the fact that is located outside of the Medoc, in the appellation of Pessac-Leognan. This 51 acre property is just southwest of Bordeaux’s city centre. It has a rather small production of red and white wines, and is the only producer to be included in both the 1855 Classification and the Classified Growth of the Graves. They perpetuate a culture of demand and exclusivity.
Although grapes have thought to have been grown on the property since Roman times, the earliest evidence detailing cultivation of a parcel dates to 1423. But the title to the domain of Haut-Brion was not bought until 1533, with construction of the chateau beginning in 1549 under the ownership of Jean de Pontac.
After his death, the estate was inherited by Arnaud II de Pontac, followed by his nephew Geoffrey in 1605. These generations focused on making the name known and selling wine from the estate. But it was the next generation, headed by Arnaud III de Pontac, that the Chateaus reputation was really strengthened. He focused on expanded their renown in England. He pioneered a new style of wine, which became a precursor to all modern-day Grand Cru reds. This innovative style of wine known as ‘New French Claret’ became hugely popular in the English market. This ultimately sparked a wine revolution according to many historians.
In 1935, the Chateau was purchased by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. Thus, a new era of Haut-Brion began. By the 1960s, his granddaughter Joan Dillon had taken over and completely modernised production and design at the estate.
Today, Chateau Haut-Brion dedicates 48.3ha to red grape varieties; 45.4% Merlot, 43.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.7% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. They also utilise 2.8ha for white varieties; 53% Semillon and 47% Sauvignon Blanc. The annual production of their Grand Vin is approximately 10,000 cases.
This world-renowned Chateau is the epitome of quality, historical significance, and prestige. Truly a necessary inclusion in any serious collector’s cellar.
