2019 A.A. Badenhorst, Secateurs Red, Swartland
AA Badenhorst Family Wines are produced in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The winery comprises 180ha of old bushvines grown in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.

The property is owned by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhors who have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930's to make natural wines in the traditional manner.
The vineyards comprise mostly old bushvines planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s to Chenin Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache. The vines are unirrigated and farmed as biologically as possible.

Grapes are whole bunch-handled so no crushing or destemming takes place. The whites are transferred directly to old casks or into concrete tanks for fermentation and ageing.
The red grapes are fermented in concrete tanks and open wooden kuipe. The post fermentation maceration is lengthy – up to 4 months -whereafter the wines are put to cask or 4000L foudres. No additions are done to the grapes other than sulphur before and after fermentation.

The Secateurs Red Blend captivates with expressive notes of blackcurrants and blackberries, offering a balanced palate with moderate acidity for a pleasantly soft mouthfeel. The wine finishes with lasting notes of blueberry, black currant, and subtle mineral notes from the granite-rich soils.

2020 Alma das Donas, Almalarga Godello, Ribeira Sacra
Located in Ribeira Sacra, in north-west Spain’s Galicia region the winery’s production is based exclusively on grapes from vineyards on the slopes of the River Sil.
The vines are cultivated by hand on the terraces steep, south/south-west facing slopes.

This wine is made from the Godello varietal – a high quality varietal, indigenous to the region.
In the 1970s, this grape variety almost became extinct, but thanks to the efforts of winemakers in Galicia who recognized its quality and potential, it was rescued. Subsequently, there has been a surge in plantings, and Godello has gained such acclaim that it is now regarded by some as Spain's finest white grape variety.

The nose is dominated by fruity aromas of apple, pear, peach and a touch of citrus.
The wine is balanced and creamy, tempered by a distinct minerality. The length is good, with a well-rounded, elegant finish.

Because of that combination of flavours, Godello wines go really well with shellfish, but the fact that they have more body and more complex characteristics means they also work with stronger flavours like octopus with paprika or anchovies and it’s a great accompaniment to cheeses.

If you enjoy white Burgundies, you’ll like this wine a lot!

2018 Altocedro, La Consulta Ano Cero Tempranillo, Uco Valley
Great to see a Tempranillo grape in La Consulta vineyard (Mendoza). Actually, this grape is the second to be produced in this area, possibly due to the Spanish colonisation many times ago. Karim (winemaker) and his team selected the Tempranillo from 30 year old vines. The whole bunch of vines are fermented in small concrete vats. Then 30% of the production is aged in American oak barrels for 8-10 months.

During its youth, the wine is fruity (blackberries and other black fruit) and well balanced between the body and the acidity. The tannins are smooth with an elegant texture.

This wine could be paired with most lamb dishes, pork (especially good with Spanish style pork and beans), roasted red peppers, tagines, roast game birds and hard sheep’s cheeses like Manchego.

2010 Antinori, Solaia, IGT
VM98RP97
The 2010 Solaia is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet. This is a beautiful vintage for Solaia which is only produced when the conditions are excellent. The fruit is particularly marked by warm days and cool nights, enhancing the aromatics and freshness in the wine. Historical data Solaia, a twenty hectare (50 acre) vineyard of the Tignanello estate with a southwestern exposure, is situated at 350-400 meters (1175-1325 feet) above sea level on a soil of calcareous rock (known as "alberese in Tuscany). The Marchesi Antinori firm produced this wine for the first time in the 1978 vintage with an initial blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, a blend repeated again in 1979. In the following vintages 20% of Sangiovese was added to the Cabernet grapes and the ratio of Cabernet Franc to Cabernet Sauvignon was changed in order to create a wine which has now become definitive in its various composing elements. 2014 Arrocal, Ribera del Duero, Crianza Meloso
One of Spain's top red wine–producing regions, Ribera del Duero is located in the northwest of the country, about 160km north of Madrid or Ribera del Duero 125 km south-west of Rioja.

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with a continental influence and an extreme nature; it boasts dry summers, long and harsh winters, low rainfall (400-500 mm/year average) and a large difference in temperatures throughout the year (from -20°C to 42°C ).
This results in grapes that are small in size, with thick skins, that have benefited from an optimal slow and late ripening period leading to concentrated flavours.

Bodega Arrocal is a family owned winery, run by Rosa Arroyo and Moisés Calvo, who are native to the area.

AGE OF THE VINEYARD: 30 years. ALTITUDE: 830 meters sea level.
VARIETY: 100% Tinto Fino. (Tempranillo)
HARVEST: Manual in 16 Kg boxes and selection table.
Aging: 12 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels and 12 months ageing in the bottle.
Aromas and flavours of black and forest fruits - blueberries, blackberries and plums, with spicy touches such as vanilla, nutmeg and cloves.
This Crianza is nicely balanced, with toasted and balsamic nuances of black liquorice and forest floor.
Harmonious and velvety tannins, which provide structure and complexity.

Serve at around 14°C with meat stews cheese platters, fatty fish, roasted vegetables and rice or pasta dishes.

NV Ataman Vermut Barbadillo
A vermouth from a range originally created by Barbadillo in the 1940s. It consists of absinthe, quassia tree bark, rosemary, Seville orange and elderberry on a base of Manzanilla sherry. The result is a rich and very herbal vermouth with a bold bitterness and real depth of flavour.
With its richness and complex flavours it puts the mass produced versions well and truly in the shade.

2020 Au Bon Climat, Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley
Jim Clendenen, “The Mind Behind” Au Bon Climat took his wine making inspiration from Burgundy, where he spent time in the 1970’s learning first-hand about traditional Burgundian wine making techniques.
After returning to the USA, he decided to produce wines in the style of Burgundy in Santa Barbara County. Au Bon Climat was thus established in 1982 harvest utilizing a repurposed dairy barn.
The results speak for themselves - multiple awards gained over many years, including ‘Winery of the Year’ recently from Antonio Galloni’s Vinous (2019) and Wine & Spirits Magazine (2020 and 2021).

This wine displays aromas and flavours of vibrant Morello cherries, complemented by hints of strawberries and a subtle earthiness. The wine has a generous and ripe profile, with gentle sweet spiciness and fine tannins contribute a subtle grip, culminating in a long, balanced and refreshing finish.

NV Barbadillo Medium Dry Amontillado
Made from the traditional local grape of Palomino Fino. The wine was designed to produce a Manzanilla sherry type. Then the flor was allowed to die away so they continued their maturation with exposure to the air in the barrel. As it is a medium dry version, this wine has been slightly sweetened with Pedro Ximenez to give it a raisined edge.

2019 Barolo Agricola Marrone Piedmont
Established in the early part of the 20th Century the winery now includes the fourth generation of the Marrone family, who manage their vineyards with care. (All vineyard management operations are carried out exclusively by hand and no herbicides are used)

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Nebbiolo from vines with an average age of 35-40 years, growing at 300 – 350m above sea level.
Fermentation takes place at 28°C for 30 days. Malolactic fermentation in large barrels of 30 Hl (50%) and barrique (50%).

“Perfumed, in a delicate, haunting way. Then deeply earthy: mushrooms, sous bois, tart cherry and truffle. Flavours entwined with tannins that feel gossamer fine but there are so many of them that they cling to the fruit like a film of fine chalk dust. Tamarind on the finish. Determined but elegant. A slender, long-necked wine with a set jaw.”

2019 Barolo Alasia Piemonte
Araldica's premier Barolo, sourced from carefully chosen vineyards, is a wine that is both approachable and richly flavoured.

The grapes, meticulously hand-harvested, undergo a three-year maturation process in 50hl Slavonian oak casks. Following this, the wine is gently racked from oak and fined, resulting in a fine and expressive style that encapsulates Barolo's classic blend of mature, lightly floral aromas alongside richness and structure.

The wine boasts dark plum, leather, and delicate violet notes, complemented by hints of sweet spice.
This full-bodied red is characterized by its firmness and ripeness, delivering powerful flavours that are well-balanced by ripe tannins, intricate savoury undertones, and a lingering finish. For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant this Barolo and pair it with roasted red meats and game.
