Producer Profile
Kopke
Kopke is one of the oldest port wine houses in Portugal, established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopkë, a German consul in Porto. The founding of the Kopke estate marked the beginning of a nearly 400-year legacy in the Douro Valley, preceding many of the other great port houses by decades. Originally a trading company, Kopke soon shifted its focus to wine production, quickly earning a reputation for quality and consistency. Its long history is deeply interwoven with the rise of the port trade, making Kopke a foundational figure in the evolution of the industry.
The estate’s vineyards, most notably Quinta de São Luiz, are situated in the heart of the Douro region, where steep schist terraces provide ideal conditions for growing traditional grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz. Kopke was among the pioneers in recognizing the potential of single-quinta production and has long focused on the importance of terroir in defining the character of its wines. The Quinta de São Luiz estate is particularly celebrated for its contribution to Kopke’s acclaimed Tawny Ports, which are aged in oak barrels and known for their elegance, complexity, and depth of flavour.
While best known for its aged tawnies - 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years old - Kopke has also played a significant role in preserving traditional port styles and winemaking methods. The estate has maintained a commitment to hand-harvesting, foot treading in lagares, and long aging in seasoned wood, blending historical practices with modern precision. As the oldest port house still in operation, Kopke is not only a producer of fine wines but also a custodian of the centuries-old heritage of the Douro Valley. Its legacy is one of resilience, excellence, and a deep-rooted connection to the land and culture of northern Portugal.
