2004 La Rioja Alta, Gran Reserva 890 Seleccion Especial, Rioja Magnum
VM93RP94+
The 2004 Gran Reserva 890 is the top of the range here, a wine that is only released three/four times per decade in exceptional years. They start by sourcing grapes from their oldest vineyards and going through a slow process of aging the wine in American oak barrels for six years, with ten manual rackings, and each time there is a selection of only the best barrels. The bottled wine is 13.5% alcohol. The nose is all about forest floor aromas, game, cigar ash, incense, old furniture and some smoked meat. The palate is very fresh with slightly dusty tannins and nice acidity.
Decant for 2 hours and enjoy with beef or game.

2016 La Rioja Alta, Torre de Ona Martelo Reserva, Rioja
La Rioja Alta have spent 20 years identifying the best parcel of the Torre de Oña estate – this is a true labour of love. The 2016 Martelo is produced with the grapes from Torre de Oña's oldest vines, mostly Tempranillo (94%), with small amounts of Mazuelo, Garnacha and even Viura representing the vineyard’s traditional blend. It represents a departure to a slightly more modern style for this bastion of traditional winemaking. The results are brilliant and La Rioja Alta see Finca Martelo as being one of their prestige wines in years to come...Torre de Ona became part of the La Rioja Alta family in 1995 – it is situated in Rioja Alavesa subzone where the chalk soils and old vines lend themselves to a fuller, more modern style of Wine. Although known for their ultra-traditional style at La Rioja Alta, the wine produced here blends the modern and traditional approaches, with the use of both French and American oak, and maturing the wine for a shorter period in oak (

2015 La Rioja Alta, Vina Arana Gran Reserva, Rioja
Available for delivery from Autumn 2022.

"2015 is a spiritual successor to the legendary 2010 and 2005 for La Rioja Alta. Without a doubt, 2015 is one of the best vintages ever for us in Rioja” Julio Sáenz, Head Winemaker

The Arana name was first trademarked in 1974, with the wine named after one of the families that had been at the helm of La Rioja Alta.

Vina Arana is only released in the finest vintages, with the 2015 completing a trio of fine Gran Reservas from Rioja Alta, it’s siblings being the iconic 904 and 890.

The blend of this wine has recently changed from the original Vina Arana, with Graciano replacing Mazuelo. The Graciano gives and unmistaken aromatic intensity and acidity, which carries the structure and elegance of the Tempranillo.

This fantastic vintage of Viña Arana Gran Reserva comes from 40 year-old vines in Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas in Rodezno and Montecillo estate in Fuenmayor. Each varietal is vinified separately

2020 Maetierra Dominum, Palacio Camino Real Crianza, Rioja
Generous strawberry, raspberry and plum fruits are woven skilfully with vanilla and spice, thanks to some time in oak. In fact, this wine has been aged for 18 months in barrel, which is longer than the minimum requirement for a Rioja Crianza.
There's a little complexity with some coffee and balsamic notes, but ultimately it is smooth, fruity and incredibly easy drinking.

Unsurprisingly, this Reserva is a real classic. It’s a masterclass in ageing, spending 36 months in oak before further resting in the bottle. The long maturation gives it incredible structure and complexity. Full. Smooth. Supple. Its flavours are richly complex. Think blackberry, vanilla, coffee and a hint of spice. This will easily last for a decade – but it's delicious now. Enjoy it best with rack of lamb.

2015 La Rioja Alta, Gran Reserva 904, Rioja
VM95
Gran Reserva 904 was first made in 1904, with the 2015 vintage the first ever 904 Seleccion Especial ever made. Rioja Alta has only awarded this classification to the Gran Reserva 890 2001 and 2005 and the Vina Ardanza 1964, 1973, 2001 and 2010.

This is a very elegant 904 from an outstanding vintage. A must for Rioja lovers!

904 is almost peerless in the fine wine world in terms of value for money and its maturity upon release makes it an extremely exciting proposition. The 904 release is one of the most anticipated releases in the fine wine calendar, with demand far outstripping supply. As with other vintages this wine is only made in great vintages and is released only when the winery thinks it is ready to drink, however it also has several years of drinking ahead of it.

89% Tempranillo from 60+ year old vines in Brinas, Labastia and Villalbe. 11% Graciano from Montecillo.
