Producer Profile
Chateau Figeac
Chateau Figeac is a Grand Cru Classe estate in Saint-Emilion, as well as being the largest estate in this appellation. It covers 54 hectares, with 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot, due to its having gravelly soil. Unusually, their wines have a certain semblance to the wines of the Medoc despite sitting on the right bank.
The Chateau originates from an ancient which can be traced back to the 2nd Century when a Roman villa was built on the estate. Then, by the late 18th Century, the property was close to 200 hectares, before being sold and subdivided several times over the course of many years. It was eventually purchased by Henri de Chevremont, and the estate was managed by his family for many years.
The vineyards are situated on the north-western corner of the appellation, close to the Pomerol border. The terroir is characterised by quartz and flint over a subsoil of blue clay. This is distinctly different to the limestone plateau which makes up so much of the appellation, and thus allows for the success of Cabernets here.
