Producer Profile
La Mondotte
La Mondotte is a small estate located on the famous right bank limestone plateau, just east of Saint-Emilion, adjacent to Troplong-Mondot. The estate is currently owned by Count Stefan von Neipperg, who also owns Canon-la-Gaffeliere. They are widely recognised for their rich, opulent wines which are increasingly difficult to source.
In the 1990s, Neipperg attempted to merge his estates, but his plans were halted by the local authorities on the basis that the estates did not sit in the same tier of classification. This inspired him to modernise La Mondotte, and really focus on terroir-driven wines which showed what the estate was really capable of.
The vineyards cover 4.5 hectares with clay-rich soils perfect for merlot, alongside a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. Their perfect aspect, steep slopes allow for production of super ripe grapes. The grapes are fermented and then matured in 100% new oak for 12-18 months.
